Masquerade Marriage

12

Bar of spicy soap in hand, Brody strode toward Loch Drummond. His nightly trek to the loch gave him time to think as well as bathe before he joined Megan in her upstairs parlor.

Last night’s events had rooted through his mind all day and still would not let him be. He’d all but blurted his love and laid his life at Megan’s feet. Her lips being so close and him not able to claim them had driven him to the brink of losing self-control. He’d tossed and turned on the borrowed bed all the long night until finally he’d taken Megan’s wee mare out for a moonlight gallop. After he returned the horse to her stall and gave her a good brush down, he’d still been so agitated he could not sit, much less sleep. So he headed out onto the moors...and ran and ran and ran, until he fell in his tracks.

But that was last night. Tonight he had mastery over his untamed urges.

He approached the shore of the beautiful loch, shucked his elegant evening clothes, and pitched them over the usual convenient bushes. Alone, surrounded by silent moors, he tried to puzzle out when and where Lord MacMurry might murder him. He hadna seen Lord Mabry for several days and that added to his worry. Always, he kept his dagger at hand. At night, his broadsword waited under the pillow.

Lord, I pray nay more than two sneak up to take my life. Pray Ye will alert me when the time arrives. If Megan’s da himself comes for me, I willna raise a hand against him. Give me time to win him over.

Every nebulous moment he spent inside the MacMurry castle he walked a tightrope. One wrong step and he’d tumble to his death and fail Megan. Then Mabry could wed her. Only the time he spent alone with Megan in her wee drawing room gave him space to breathe. But last night tortured him worse than a public flogging. He was not sure he could handle being alone with her.

Under a bright May moon casting enough light to march by, Brody stretched out his muscles, loosening them before performing his exercises. Castle living could cause a man to grow soft. He would not fall into that trap. His and Megan’s uncertain future demanded strength.

As he stretched, his mind reached out to the promise he had made God.

Ye got me through the hell of meeting Megan’s folks, and Ye brought Ma and Fiona to a safe new life, so I’m bound now to trust Ye and go where Ye lead me.

Though he had no warm feelings of faith to cheer him and he still felt like a sheep that somehow got separated from an uncaring shepherd, he would keep his word. The scripture reading last night decided him. Years ago he presented his body for whatever work God wanted, and he never revoked that act. Now he would go a step further. He would not conform to the world.
